FMP/Free Music Production (Berlin, Germany)
Founded in September 1969, FMP was meant to be a co-operative: a musicians' label set up to organise their concerts and to produce their records themselves. Right from the beginning and for a long time after, the driving forces behind FMP were Peter Brötzmann and Jost Gebers.
The first FMP release was European Echoes with the Manfred Schoof
Orchestra recorded in June 1969. Following this were releases of even
earlier projects such as the Peter Brötzmann Octet's now legendary
Machine Gun. Largely through the efforts of Jost Gebers, Dagmar
Gebers, and Dieter Hahne working closely with musicians the annual Workshop
Freie Musik and associated recording projects have produced scores of
legendary records. Some of these include the various projects of Peter
Kowald: Duos;Was Da Ist; Touch the Earth... etc; Hans Reichel:
Death of the Rare Bird etc; Alex von Schlippenbach: Elf Bagatellen;
Smoke; Charles Gayle: Touchin' on Trane; Cecil Taylor: Riobec;
Alms Tiergarten (Spree); Looking; Celebrated Blazons - and
the list goes on.
After 29 Years, FMP still appears as the focus of free improvisation in
Berlin: as the organiser for concerts, workshops, and concert tours, and
as the record producer that documents and keeps the activities going.
