Enja Records (Munich, Germany)
Enja Records was set up in 1971 by Matthias Winckelmann a graduate student (economics and sociology) in Munich, and Horst Weber a free lance clothes designer who promoted jazz concerts in his native Aachen. On borrowed money, their first recording featured U.S. ex-patriate Mal Waldron.
Since the early '70s, the Munich based operation has devoted itself to the documentation of totally uncompromising artists. Among those represented on the label are: Rabih Abou-Khalil, Ray Anderson, Chet Baker, Kenny Barron, Arthur Blythe, Abraham Burton, Eric Dolphy, Dizzy Gillespie, George Gruntz, Coleman Hawkins, Abdullah Ibrahim, Ingrid Jensen, Elvin Jones, Lee Konitz, Wayne Krantz, Charles Mingus, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Louis Sclavis, Leni Stern, Aki Takase, Cecil Taylor, Gary Thomas, Gianluigi Trovesi, McCoy Tyner, Dan Wall, Mitch Watkins, Mike Westbrook and many others.
In October 1996, Matthias Winckelmann was awarded the Honours Prize Of The German Phonographic Critics, a body of 100 music critics in classical, jazz and pop music. The jury commented on “... his feeling for talent, his understanding of the artist's personality, and his integrity as a producer... The name ENJA - the label that he and Horst Weber founded - has gained an excellent reputation throughout the world."
In early 1986 Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber decided to separate, and they have continued to produce work on different imprints under the ENJA label.
