Incus Records (London, England)

Formed in 1970, Incus was the first British musician-owned independent label. Tony Oxley had the original idea, Michaels Walters put up the money, and Derek Bailey and Evan Parker were recruited as co-directors.

By the mid-1980s Incus had an impressive catalogue of 52 LPs featuring some of the most important and innovative music of the era. Now run by Derek Bailey and Karen Brookman, who does much of the design work and administration, the Incus catalogue consists of 30 CDs plus several remnant LPs that are collectors items, videos featuring Derek Bailey with John Stevens, Will Gaines and Min Tanaka (dance), Bailey solo and, of course, Bailey's classic book Improvisation: its nature and practice in music.

Matchless Recordings and Publishing ( Essex, Great Britain)

Formed by Eddie Prévost, Matchless documents the 'meta-musical ensemble' AMM over the past 30-odd years. Much of the AMM music has been remastered on CD format which is better suited to the group's seamless performances. The time and side length limitations of vinyl LP meant the recordings suffered from heavy editing to match the format.

The Matchless catalogue runs to more than 30 titles and includes such masterworks as Marilyn Crispell & Eddie Prévost, Band on the Wall; The Eddie Prévost Band, LIVE Vols 1&2 1977; and many other seminal recordings from the core of the UK free improvising scene.

Also publishes quality texts including Eddie Prévost's book, No Sound is Innocent.
