The AALY Trio with Ken VandermarkAALY Trio / Ken Vandermark Stumble WOB-002 Mats Gustafsson - tenor sax, fluteophone, flute; Peter Janson- bass; Kjell Nordeson - drums; Ken Vandermark - tenor sax, clarinet, bass clarinet. Recorded live January 1998, Unity Temple, Chicago, U.S.A. 5 tracks, time 57:56 "Vandermark and Gustafsson give the music such palpability, it seems as if one can hear the grain of their actual voices coming through their horns. The rhythm section...treads a fine line between holding the pieces together and letting them fall completely apart. They play so slowly, the music seems to dissipate. It's as if they stumble yet gracefully catch themselves. This works well with Vandermark's slow-moving bluesy compositions." - Bruce Carnevale - Jazziz, December '98 PGJ (5th Ed) *** The AALY Trio with Ken Vandermark Live at the Glenn Miller Café WOB 008 Mats Gustafsson - alto sax, tenor sax; Ken Vandermark - tenor sax, clarinet; Peter Janson - bass; Kjell Nordeson - drums. Recorded March 1999, at the Glenn Miller Café, Stockholm, Sweden. 4 tracks: 1. Unit Character (for Jimmy Lyons) 8:56, 2. Ghosts (for Albert Ayler) 17:42, 3. AlvaJo 12:21, 4. Idioms 11.55. Total time 51:07. "In March of 1999, Ken Vandermark returned to Sweden for the third time since 1996 to reunite with Mats Gustafsson's critically acclaimed AALY Trio. The results of that tour's musical breakthroughs can be heard on Live At The Glenn Miller Cafe, which features four highlights from the explosive concert they played to an ecstatic, packed house. The performance was electrifying: saxophones firing splitting melodies into the audience that had formed a captivated wall around them, as the rhythmic machine of Kjell Nordeson and Peter Jansen pushed the energy level through the roof." - liner notes by Thurston Moore PGJ (5th Ed) ***(*)

The film YARA was premiered at the Venice Film festival in September to a standing ovation and the sound track is a strong, integral part of it. Later (2:47) total time: 63:04 British critic Richard Palmer wrote about "R'n'B" (ENJ-9033 2), Allen's last release as a leader: "The music overflows with fresh ideas and authoritative execution (...) evincing prodigious imagination as well as high-spirited drive. Plenty of passion and good-humoured power, yes, but every phrase of every track is characterised by sophistication and comprehensive musicality (...). So don't hurry on by: this near-hour's worth will enrich your collection as it has mine." Based on the leader's heavy originals and some modern jazz standards by such as Benny Golson and Herbie Hancock, the new Eddie Allen Quintet (featuring on four tunes internationally well-known trombonist Steve Turre) offers an exciting re-definition of neo-bop aesthetics ready to face the artistic adventures of the 21st century.
